The history of the "King of Flanders"
The historic "Bader House" in Augsburg, in whose vaults the guest house brewery King of Flanders, established 1988, hosted in the Middle Ages one of the oldest breweries in the city. In the antiquarian books of the Town of Augsburg, the Bader House is still today a so-called "Brauereigerechtsame" To the king of Flanders" inscribet. Based on this law, in this house, to be allowed, to brew beer.
The name "King of Flanders" presumably referred to a locality, which in this property was located. Named after the King of Flanders and Brabant, the brewers and the beer he was very affectionate and is known under the name "Gambrinus" as the patron saint of the brewers.
Also, it appears from old records show that in 1597 the brewer Leonhard Schissler from water, hops and malt, the "Three-Heller-beer" brewed in this property. Strictly according to the Bavarian Purity Law of 1516 which is to protect ordinary people against fraudulent "Bierpanscherei" was adopted. A precursor of this famous historical law is currently in Augsburg to find: Emperor Frederick I. (Barbarossa) assigned the castellan of Augsburg in the year 1156 to dseclare penalty of five Gulden, if bad beer would be poured. And so we brew in the "King of Flanders," a naturally cloudy "Three-Heller-Beer", now so clean and fresh like "in the jear one".
